G4 – Stap 1: Wat is materieel?

Turkish leaders in CSR Reporting

People that follow me know that I repeatedly stress the importance of getting acquainted. Too many companies start of their CSR Report, expecting the readers to know who they are, what markets they services, what goods or services it delivers: Tell your audience who you are, before you tell them the nitty-gritty. In this blog I want to share you some insights I learned from the region session on Turkey at the GRI Conference 2013, introducing two Turkish leaders in CSR Reporting: Coca Cola Içecek & Akçansa.

Continue Reading »

G4 weighing Context versus Materiality

So far everybody at GRI Conference 2013 embraces the focus on materiality without any restrictions. And there are several strong concerns, for an over-focus on materiality. Sure I support the process in which companies ask their stakeholders: do we report what you expect us to report?

First in process is setting the context

Companies often forget to really introduce themselves. To my eyes, that is the biggest mistake in CSR reporting made. Many stakeholders do not really know your company. AGAIN: Many stakeholders do not really know your company. I am sorry, if that hurts your feelings, but this is true. Continue Reading »

Reporting outside your ownership boundary

We are halfway the GRI conference. The conference is more than perfectly organised with great speakers, wonderful App, veggie foods and WiFi support. To my surprize the issue of reporting outside the boundaries of ownership is not discussed yet.

It is a great leap forward for G4 to lay much so much attention on Materiality. That helps companies to create smaller reports, only discussing issues that really matter. Lets hope companies have the courage to really focus on the material topics. Continue Reading »

Communication should bridge the gap to the ordinary world

According to Achim Steiner @GRI2013 Sustainability communication needs to adopt a more digestive language and it must become more societal. True! Then he says that the main drivers for CSR Reporting are:

  1. Efficiency
  2. Risk management
  3. Licence to operate

I am afraid that Achim lost society with that list. At least he lost me. Continue Reading »

Future of application levels is unsure

Rumours say that the application levels A, B and C will stay available for companies reporting against G3 and G3.1. The decision to stop using the application levels for G4 is still being discussed. Continue Reading »

A good corporate citizen reports on tax avoidance practices

GRI launches today it’s fourth generation guideline for Corporate Social Responsibility. The new guideline will probably be an extended version of G3, but that should not scare you of, if you accept it as a guideline.

Like the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual guides psychiatrists in the wide field of mental disorders helping them to talk the same language worldwide, G4 should be the manual for companies that want to be a good corporate citizen. A guideline helping companies to find the right topics to report on, giving insight into the specific challenges and providing preferred definitions. Continue Reading »

Lees verder…

Ontwikkelingen in rapportage over MVO (1)

Lees verder…
